We have noticed that you all like to learn tidbits about our therapists. Because of this, we’re going to share a bit about Becky Lawyer, who is one of our trauma and grief gurus. Enjoy!
What do you love most about the work you do? I’ve wanted to be a therapist since I was in high school. Even at a young age, I was drawn to the opportunity of developing deeper connections with people, moving beyond the surface level connections we often experience in our daily lives. As a therapist, I have the greatest privilege in being asked to enter into the most vulnerable spaces with others, to be in relationship together and to be a part of someone else’s growth and journey.
Who do you especially enjoy working with, and what do you appreciate about these populations? I love working with both older adolescents and adults. Being able to help folks determine their values and what they truly want out of life while overcoming the barriers that have prevented them from reaching these goals, whether this may be depression, anxiety, past traumas or perfectionist tendencies.
I also have a passion for working with adolescents and adults as they learn how to navigate and redefine life following the loss of a loved one in their life. Walking alongside someone following the death of a loved one is a unique space to occupy with someone. This is a time of immense vulnerability. An experience that strips away the daily masks we may wear, and instead allows folks to share their true, authentic thoughts and feelings while using the therapeutic relationship to weather it all.
How would you describe your therapy style to someone who has never been to therapy before? I view therapy as an active, collaborative process that results in healing and growth long-term. That the therapist serves as a “fellow traveler” helping folks identify and remove the barriers that are preventing them from living the life they want.
My therapy style utilizes a mix of skill building, cognitive and body based therapies, with some humor added in occasionally, to help folks achieve their goals.
What is something you wish more people understood about therapy? That therapy is a collaborative process focused on self-awareness and building emotional resilience rather than a quick fix. That even as a therapist, I don’t have all the answers, but that I will help you uncover your own answers and solutions.
And that your therapist is deeply invested in you. We remember the names of your family members, your pets, the accomplishments you achieve. You matter to us.
What is something that people might be surprised to learn about you? That my favorite form of self-care involves breaking glass and creating new life and beauty from these pieces (I am a stained glass artist).
What is something that reliably makes you laugh? Funny animal videos.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off? Eating good food, going for a long walk, maybe doing a sauna / cold plunge combo and doing something creative.
Coffee or tea? I’m 65% a coffee person and 35% a tea person.
Morning person or night owl? I think my preference is being a night owl, but through being a parent, I have learned to enjoy being a morning person.
Favorite Minnesota season? Fall!
If you had an unexpected free afternoon, how would you spend it? Probably either by taking a long walk, going ice skating, or curling up with a good book somewhere cozy.
