That, or going on a run, or spending time in the garden, or even just standing outside and feeling the sun on their face. But what about when you live in a cold place where it gets dark before five and stepping outside may mean a bit of sun but also snot freezes to your face? What are you supposed to do then??

We brainstormed a few ways to stay well during this cold and dark season when long periods of outside time isn’t an option!

  1. Mindfully make and drink a hot beverage.
  2. Hand-knit a blanket – no knitting needles or experience needed!game night blog
  3. Get a SAD lamp and use it daily. The human body needs light!
  4. Call a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while.
  5. Gather friends for a movie, board game or puzzle night.
  6. Take your vitamins, especially vitamin D, vitamin C and zinc. Schedule your annual physical during winter months and get your vitamin levels checked.
  7. Wash your hands a few/several times per day.
  8. Boost your skincare – try out some extra products to keep your skin moisturized during the dry months.
  9. Be sure you’re drinking sufficient water!hygge blog
  10. Eat some fun comfort foods and also remember to integrate plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
  11. Start a gratitude journal, jar, or app and spend a few minutes writing every morning or evening. Do this by yourself or with someone else.
  12. Light a scented candle or diffuse some cleansing/fresh essential oils.
  13. Be inspired by hygge to create a soothing and cozy home environment.
  14. Declutter your wardrobe and donate things you don’t wear anymore.
  15. Decorate your house or apartment for winter/the holidays.
  16. Try a new soup recipe; go heavy on the veggies.
  17. Invest in a weighted or heated blanket.
  18. Get your flu shot!
  19. Complete a workout. If working out isn’t your thing, try dancing or some other form of movement that will raise your heart rate.
  20. We know it’s cold, but yes, we do still need to go outside! Put on your best warm gear and go breathe some fresh air. Play outside; make a snowperson or snow angel. Laugh. If it’s super cold, a few minutes is long enough. Exhilarate your body and then cozy up with a good book and warm drink.

Remember, you are not alone and people can thrive in cold climates. This is a hard season for a lot of people, and the inability to be outside for long in the cold doesn’t help. Take care of yourself, embrace the cold when you can, and ask for help when you need it!snow angel blog
